Volcanic Activity

This week, Geology 9 is focusing on volcanic activity. India only has one active volcano named the Barron Islands Volcano, which is in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands. It was dead for 150 years until January 23rd of 2017 when the volcano had ash coming out of it, and then began erupting. It is the only active volcano in all of South Asia!

To keep everyone safe, citizens of India can only visit the volcano by charter boat, and after getting approved by the Forest Department in Port Blair; the capital of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands. They want to make sure that everyone is aware of the danger of this active volcano.

While the Barron Islands Volcano is the only active volcano in India, India has 6 other extinct volcanoes. They are located in Deccan Traps, Dhinodhar Hills, Dhosi Hill, and Tosham Hills. India is fortunate enough to only have one active volcano since they are so prone to other natural disasters such as earthquakes.

  1. Hello Gabrielle. Thanks for commenting on my post! I at first thought there may be people who live there but then you wrote that it can be visited by vote. Still its a very pretty island. I wonder how big is.

  2. Hey Gabrielle!
Extremely interesting read, especially with my chose country of Nepal neighboring India, and while as volcanic activity is extremely rare in Nepal, it seems to be the same case for your country of India, with both countries seemingly having large mountain structures but little to no activity, and its place unfortunately earthquakes seem to happen instead more often.
