Earthquakes in India

As you can see on the India earthquake zone map below, most of the zone 5 earthquakes are on the outer parts of India. This is because of the mountain lines that are throughout India, but predominately on the border lines. Zone 5 earthquakes are the most detrimental with the highest magnitude.

A shocking fact is that 54% of the land in India is prone to earthquakes; the majority of that being prone to Zone 5 earthquakes. Crazy, right? Over the past years, India has experienced some of the most detrimental earthquakes our world has seen. Some of the most earthquake-prone cities in India include: Guwahati, Srinagar, Delhi, Mumbai, and Chennai. In all of these cities, the citizens are cautious at all times for an earthquake to hit, and their homes should already be ready with an emergency bag, and hopefully a safe place to hide if an earthquake hits.

One of the systems that India uses to prevent earthquake catastrophe is the Earthquake Early Warning system (EEW). The EEW gives the citizens of India time to vacate buildings and protect their families when they know an earthquake will be occurring soon, or come again in a larger magnitude. It is very helpful and important to have a system such as the EEW in such an earthquake-prone environment, as it helps keep everyone safe and prepared for when a high magnitude earthquake hits.

  1. Hi Gabrielle,

It's crazy to hear that over half of India is affected by earthquakes. Due to the fact that they suffer from some pretty damaging earth, it is important that they have a system that keeps them protected from the effects of these quakes. The EEW sounds like it should be used by everyone in those cities you mentioned that are most prone to earthquakes.

    Thank you for sharing!

  2. Very fascinating map. It is interesting that almost all of the zone 5 areas are near the border of India at the mountains, and that all of the zone 1 areas are more inland. It is also interesting to think about the infrastructure other countries have developed to prevent earthquake damage, as well as warning the citizens. All of the precautions taken to make buildings safe is something I take for granted here in the US.
